Schools Youth Ministry in the Archdiocese is implemented through Catholic Schools Youth Ministry Australia (CSYMA) in all Catholic secondary schools.
CSYMA has a vision to inspire and equip Catholic schools and youth ministries to become centers of the new evangelisation. It is a professional teacher and Church leader centred organisation, networking Catholic schools and youth ministries for the mission of the Church.
CSYMA has three focus areas, including: Youth Ministry through a four-phase model of student formation; post-school youth ministers; and teacher and Church leader formation.
WHAT DO YOU DO?
The Youth Ministry Model in our secondary schools includes the following Four-Phases:
- Retreat Experience (Catch the Wave) – this initial retreat experience seeks to proclaim the Gospel message to all young people in our Catholic schools in year 8 or year 9. These retreats include sessions on God’s Love, the Salvation Message, the Gospel Message in Modern Society and Reconciliation and Forgiveness.
- Religious Education Curriculum Pathways – following the Retreat, students in years 9 to 11 are given the opportunity to enter into Youth Ministry Units of Study, within the RE Curriculum, that include Introduction to Youth Ministry, Youth Ministry and Leadership and Youth Ministry and Spirituality.
- Youth Ministry Team and Youth Academy – after being formed through the Youth Ministry Units, students may form a Youth Ministry Team within the school that includes an Australian Catholic University supported formation program that engages young people into the life of the Church beyond school (Youth Academy). The Youth Ministry Team is the backbone of the model and helps to animate faith within the school by leading liturgies, retreats and outreach.
- Connection with Broader Church – pathways for young people to engage in the life of the Church beyond school are established including through the work of Youth Ministers.
This school based model of student formation is supported by a number of events including the LEAD Conference, SHINE Gathering, SPIRIT Retreat and the Australian Catholic Youth Festival.
