The Canberra and Goulburn Youth Ministers launched the Youth Ministry Model at St John Paul II College through a ‘Catch the Wave’ Retreat. The retreat was run for the whole of the year 9 cohort and was received really well, with students signing up to the Youth Ministry units beginning next term.
A team of six CG Youth Ministers led the retreat across two key sessions, reaching over 140 students. The sessions focussed on exploring the theme of ‘Catching the Wave of Faith’. One of the Youth Ministers, Alannah Hodge said: “it was so great to see so many students stand up and express their interest in a relationship with God. I was quite nervous at the start of the response time but as soon as one of the students jumped up for a blessing, the rest came in waves! It was really beautiful to see.”
The retreat begun with Nathan Galea from the Catholic Education office introducing the day’s theme and focusing on living in a ‘loud’ world, before generating the excitement with some engaging icebreakers and a charade and a drama before breaking open the theme with Hannah McMahon (Youth Minister at St John Paul II College and Holy Spirit Parish) giving a personal sharing and Jordan Hodge giving a talk focussed on the theme ‘Follow = Come + Go’.
Finally the students had a time to reflect and respond. There was an opportunity for them to come forward for a blessing from the Youth Ministers. It was incredible to see majority of the students come forward for this blessing, and being open to catching the wave of faith.
Overall, the day was a huge success, with many students expressing their interest in the CSYMA youth ministry elective next term!
